As you can imagine, the first two weeks around the beginning of the academic year are extremely busy for any student, let alone for a member of KY board. I thought that it would be cool to tell you something about how it was for me.
Monday, August 29th: The orientation week begins! Everyone seems very enthusiastic at KY office. The day flies by with meetings and independent work. At 17:00 the whole board is at Nokia Hall watching the KY documentary with new students.
Wednesday, August 31st: Discussions with new walruses. I’m at Nokia Hall with Tapio and Seppo Ikäheimo. The walruses look very excited and they seem to absorb everything we say, yet they are also very active in telling about their own ideas. In the afternoon I visit Arabia to go through Thursday’s presenting at the Opening Ceremony of Aalto University. Afterwards I meet with Helsinki International Week team and then head to Santahamina to meet my boyfriend.
Thursday, September 1st: Busy day! We have a company meeting at 8:00 concerning an upcoming case competition. At 9:30 we go to a breakfast meeting to talk about Töölö’s 7 Wonders Campus Walk, after which I give a presentation about KY to our new international degree students. Then I really have to run to be early in Arabia, because the Opening Ceremony of Aalto University starts at 13:00! Everything goes good and the next stop is in Otaniemi, where Aalto Party has already begun. We’re back at KY around 19:00 and I go through my e-mail. The long day ends, when I get home around 23:00.
Friday, September 2nd: Walrus Expo! Before the expo I meet the new exchange students and tell them about KY activities. At the expo hundreds of walruses come through the international sector’s room and we get to tell them more about different kinds of international possibilities. Members of iCo, the International Committee, are there with me! The night continues very lively with Walrus Party until very late night.
Tuesday, September 6th: I’m at KY recruitment stand in the main lobby almost the whole day. Couple of iCo members has come to help me out. Later on we have a meeting with iCo to discuss about i.e. our checkpoint at the Walrus Day.
Wednesday, September 7th: In the morning we meet with KY board. I get a sudden honor to go and have a lunch with the class of ’51 that has graduated 60 years ago! It’s wonderful to hear what KY has been like in the 40’s and 50’s. After lunch I go to a quick meeting to talk about next week’s Harkkasitsit by NESU-KY. Later I meet the organizers of Hidden Helsinki City Race.
Thursday, September 8th: The Walrus Day! I wake up at 5:30 so that I’ll be at KY on time. We prepare a breakfast for KY office at 7:00, after which we leave for the school’s main building to see the Walrus Show by KUJ. In the afternoon we get ready for iCo checkpoint and hang out in the park until 19:00. A quick pizza and to the kuntis!
The next three days are for resting and recovering. Must say, these two weeks were veeery busy yet so much fun! I really recommend KY activities for all of you.
Yours,
Heini
